Former Cape Henlopen High School student Ryan McDonough , 22 , is in the process of enlisting in the Army for a three-year tour of active duty.Married , with a two-year-old son , McDonough went to the Army recruiter in his hometown of Green Bay , Wis. , shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
I didn't go with a thought of getting revenge against those people that attacked us , though I really do despise them for doing that , he said in a phone interview , Oct. 11.I don't want to play hero ; I just want to do my part for America , my country..
McDonough said he thought the enlistment process was interesting , despite the ton of paperwork he had to complete.I scored well on my aptitude tests , and I want to pursue Army training in satellite communications or satellite guidance systems , he explained. That education , combined with the hands-on experience should benefit me. Many of the courses the Army will give me can be transferred as college credits whenever I get out of the Army.It seems like a good opportunity to me..
Family support for his decision is crucial , McDonough said.My wife is very supportive , and my son really doesn't care at this point. We'll be together wherever I'm stationed after basic training , and we're all looking forward to it , he said.
...
McDonough will report for duty at either Fort Leonard Wood , Mo. , or Fort Campbell , Ky. at the beginning of November.I'm not a bit nervous about basic training , he said.I went to Valley Forge Military Academy and know what it's all about..
